About the Focus Timer

What is this?

The ability to sustain focused attention is one of the most valuable skills in an age of constant distraction. The Pomodoro Technique, developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s, popularised the idea of working in focused intervals (traditionally 25 minutes) separated by short breaks. Research on attention residue shows that switching between tasks leaves part of your mind stuck on the previous one — single-tasking in focused blocks avoids this cost.

How it works

Choose a duration, a pottery type, and a repair material, then start the session. As long as you stay in the app, the pottery gradually repairs. If you leave the app, a grace period countdown begins — return in time and the repair continues; stay away too long and the repair fails. Completed sessions add a beautifully repaired piece to your shelf.

Reference ranges

Short focus15–25 minutes
Deep work45–90 minutes
Extended90–120 minutes
Good to know: The pottery repair metaphor is inspired by kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold. Each focused session is an act of repair — turning something broken into something more beautiful. The visual progress makes abstract focus time tangible and rewarding.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best focus duration?

It depends on your task and experience. Beginners often do well with 25-minute sessions, while experienced practitioners can sustain 50–90 minutes of deep work. Experiment to find what works for you, and take a 5–10 minute break between sessions.

Why does leaving the app fail the session?

Focus requires resisting distraction. The consequence of failing when you leave makes the commitment real — it transforms a passive timer into an active commitment device that helps you build deeper concentration.

Can I use my phone during a focus session?

You can add approved apps to an emergency whitelist in Settings. If you must leave for a genuine emergency, you can claim it using a whitelisted app. Otherwise, staying in the app keeps the repair on track.
