About the Currency Exchange Calculator

What is this?

A currency exchange rate is the price of one currency in terms of another — for example, how many euros one US dollar buys. Rates fluctuate constantly due to supply and demand in the foreign exchange market, influenced by interest rates, inflation, trade balances, and geopolitical events. This calculator helps you convert amounts between currencies using current exchange rates.

How it is calculated

To convert from one currency to another, multiply the amount by the exchange rate. For example, if 1 USD = 0.92 EUR, then 100 USD = 100 × 0.92 = 92 EUR. To convert back, divide by the rate: 92 EUR ÷ 0.92 = 100 USD. Always confirm whether the rate is quoted as "1 base = X foreign" or the reverse.

Good to know: Banks and exchange services apply a spread — a difference between the rate they buy and sell at — and may add fees. The mid-market rate is the benchmark; the rate you actually receive will usually be slightly less favourable.

Frequently asked questions

Why do exchange rates change?

Rates move due to interest rate differences between countries, inflation rates, trade flows, political stability, and market speculation. Major events can cause sharp short-term swings.

Where can I find the real exchange rate?

Financial websites and central banks publish mid-market reference rates. For the rate you will actually get, check with your bank or card provider, including any foreign transaction fees.

Is it better to exchange money at home or abroad?

It varies. Using a card with no foreign transaction fees often gives a rate close to the mid-market rate. Airport exchange counters typically offer the least favourable rates due to high fees and wide spreads.
